CHAPTER SIX

It was a beautiful day. Driving with her grandfather and Dougal to the bay, Emily cast a critical eye over the sea. The wind was still blowing, but it was light and playful, its force just sufficient to froth up the tops of the waves. The tide was running straight into the shore, but Alexi had said the night before that very soon it would turn, giving any leaders an advantage.

This morning she had forgotten any fears. It was no excursion to prove anything other than her sailing skills. She gave a wry little smile when she realised that once again her readily forgiving nature had wiped out the night before. Not entirely, however. There was a certain quickening of her pulses when she thought of meeting Alexi in the light of day.

Mostly, though, the race was in her mind. It was not, either, any determination to win. It was for the sheer joy of it, and she knew she would as usual make up for any lack of skill by her enthusiasm—her father's words when she had won any race against him.

She was ready too. It being still impossible to tie up the thick, heavy golden hair, she wore a hairband of deep blue. Her shorts and T-shirt were white. Maybe they raced in jeans? It only bothered her momentarily. This was what she wore to race against her father, and she Would wear it today.

She saw Alexi at once. Even against the other dark-haired men he stood out as being different. He was taller, for one thing, and even at a distance his perfect physique was obvious. He wore white jeans, sharply contrasting against a black T-shirt. He looked superb, and, as her grandfather waved to him and dropped her off, Emily had a moment of panic. Alexi drew her like a magnet.

'Gramps!’ she began anxiously, but he was already off to get a good place to view the race, his only action to wave at her too.

'Good luck, Emily! Remember you're my nearest and dearest. Don't let the side down.'

'Not in any way, Emily,' Dougal called, his eyes warning her. He too had seen her look at Alexi, and it worried her if she was so obvious. She turned away as they drove off. It seemed a long way to the little jetty with Alexi's eyes on her. In fact, everyone was staring, but it was only the long dark eyes of Alexi Karivalis that troubled her.

'Kalimera, thespinis! You crew for Kyrios Karivalis?'

There were several wide grins from the men there, and Emily nodded, smiling her greetings to them.

'Yes, I'm crewing for him. I'll do my best,'

Her admission brought nods of approval from some of the men, frowns of disapproval from others. Apparently Kyrios Karivalis was breaking tradition with a vengeance, allowing a woman to help. One young man showed nothing but hearty approval, though.

'Efcharistd, thespinis’ he said with a wide grin. 'I am sure to win, then.'

'Don't thank me too soon,' smiled Emily. 'I don't give up easily.
